Job Description

Summary:

Are you interested in affordable housing?  Would you like to reduce economic disparities exacerbated by COVID-19?  Do you want to support community members who are working on advancing better housing policies?  Do you pride yourself in your organizational and communication skills?  If so, consider becoming a Program Assistant at The Neighborhood Developers (TND).  The Program Assistant position is a full-time, non-exempt position with TND reporting directly to the Executive Director.  This position is currently remote but is expected to transition to in-person or a hybrid.

Overview:

TND is a nonprofit community development corporation based in Chelsea and Revere and also active in Everett, MA.  TND’s mission is to create strong neighborhoods enabling community members to secure a stable home, achieve economic mobility, and determine their own future.  TND builds affordable housing and mixed-income homes, supports households to achieve greater financial mobility, and supports community leaders on issues related to neighborhood conditions as well as social and economic justice.  The Program Assistant will provide general and administrative support to TND’s programs (Community Building, CONNECT, Real Estate Development, and Resident Services) and the Executive Director to advance the organization’s mission as efficiently and effectively as possible using a variety of project management, communication, and organizational skills.  The Program Assistant must be comfortable with computers, general office tasks, detail-oriented, excellent at both verbal and written communication, and proficient in Spanish.

Essential Duties

  • Conducting research on issues related to all four program areas and community development.
  • Drafting, proofreading, editing, and making copies of documents.
  • Preparing slides for presentations and handouts for meetings.
  • Assisting in planning meetings and events.
  • Scheduling meetings.
  • Reserving and setting up equipment and conference rooms for presentations and meetings.
  • Preparing meeting notes.
  • Supporting organizational events.
  • Developing and maintaining databases and contact lists.
  • Compiling and sending bulk mailings.
  • Making travel arrangements for staff attending conferences and professional training.
  • Backing up TND’s receptionist by greeting visitors, answering the phone, distributing mail, and ordering supplies, generally ensuring the smooth operation of a busy office staffed with 30 employees.
  • Acting as liaison between different programs and departments.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • 3 or more years of relevant experience or an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, including 1 to 3 years of experience in an office setting.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills both in English and Spanish.
  • Basic knowledge of office procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via phone and email and to maintain a calm demeanor and tone under stress.
  • Ability to consistently interact positively with visitors and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions and procedures accurately and thoroughly.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people from different backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use and/or learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, Zoom, and DropBox
  • Responsible, self-motivated, and able to carry out and prioritize multiple ongoing projects
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise groups of volunteers
  • Ability and desire to thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including at periodic evening or weekend hours, not to exceed 40 hours/week

Desired:

  • Experience working in a diverse multi-cultural community
  • Past experience as a volunteer in a community and/or human services setting

Physical Requirements

The position involves sitting, standing, lifting, looking at a computer screen, phone work etc. The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
