Deputy Director of Transformative Development Initiative

MassDevelopment is accepting applications for a Deputy Director of Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) Operations. The TDI Operations team is located in MassDevelopment’s Boston office; consideration will also be given to candidates who want to work primarily in one of our satellite offices throughout the state, although frequent travel to the Boston office and various TDI Districts will be required.

Established in 2014, TDI is an innovative accelerator program for Massachusetts Gateway Cities designed to stimulate economic growth within focused districts. The program works with cross-sector partnerships to engage community members in actionable planning, implement local economic development initiatives, and spur further public and private investment. While doing intensive community engagement and partnership development, TDI commits to deploy its economic development “toolbox” in districts over a term of years on projects involving real estate, small business, arts and culture, place making/place keeping, and other areas that influence the vibrancy and vitality of diverse commercial districts. TDI is now part of the agency’s newly created Community Development Division that seeks to leverage placed-based strategies for transformational economic development through all of MassDevelopment’s programming. This position will oversee many of the daily operations of the program and the broader Community Development Division, and will work directly with the Director of Transformative Development and other TDI staff on program strategy and design. The TDI team is dynamic and operates horizontally, with a strong internal culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. The leadership and growth possibilities with this position are substantial—the Deputy Director of TDI Operations will be a jack-of-all-trades with the opportunity to take ownership over a wide variety of work.

Other direct responsibilities include assisting the Director of Transformative Development in all aspects of program management, scoping and managing technical assistance projects for TDI Partnerships, designing changes to and overseeing various TDI funding programs deployed in the districts, and supervising a wide variety of special projects, currently including the Small Developer Cohort and the Partnership Development Districts.
