During the second week of February, Senate President Karen Spilka and House Speaker Robert DeLeo announced their leadership teams and committee assignments for the 2019-2020 legislative session.
Rep. Aaron Michlewitz (D-Boston) will chair the House Ways and Means Committee, with Rep. Densie Garlick (D-Needham) as Vice Chair. Sen. Michael Rodrigues (D-Westport) will chair the Senate Ways and Means Committee, with Sen. Cindy Friedman (D-Arlington) serving as Vice Chair. The powerful Ways and Means Committees are responsible for writing the state budget as well as reviewing most pieces of legislation before they go to the floor of their chambers for a vote.
Rep. Kevin Honan (D-Boston) will again chair the Joint Committee on Housing. Rep. Joseph McGonagle (D-Everett) will also return this session as Vice Chair of the Housing Committee. Rep. Honan will be joined by a new Senate Co-Chair Brendan Crighton (D-Lynn). Sen. Crighton served as Vice Chair of the Housing Committee last session and replaces former Co-Chair Sen. Joseph Boncore, who was appointed as the Chair of the Transportation Committee. However, Sen. Boncore will continue to serve on the Housing Committee. Sen. Julian Cyr (D-Truro) will serve as Vice Chair of the committee. The Joint Committee on Housing handles most of the legislation having to do with affordable housing and homelessness prevention issues.
Other members of the Joint Committee on Housing include:
- Rep. Alan Silvia (D-Fall River)
- Rep. Christine Barber (D-Somerville)
- Rep. Jose Tosado (D-Springfield)
