National Housing Trust Publishes Recommendations to the Bipartisan Housing Commission Around Future Housing Policy - July 25, 2012

Some of the recommendations made by the Trust are as follows:

• Combine existing HUD and Dept. of Transportation resources to preserve affordable housing near mass transit;
• Develop innovative partnerships with utilities and a carbon reduction fund to improve the energy efficiency of affordable housing;
• Double the federal allocation of LIHTCs with the incremental amount of credits used for preservation of existing housing;
• Promote cross budgeting of federal appropriations to link housing support with health and supportive services;
• Rebalance federal housing expenditures to expand assistance for extremely low income households; and
• Ensure that GSE successors have explicit government guarantee to maintain multifamily liquidity.
