MassNAHRO Issues Response to Governor's Public Housing Legislation - January 10, 2013

MassNAHRO UNVEILS MAJOR REFORM PLAN FOR MASSACHUSETTS PUBLIC HOUSING

The association representing 242 local housing authorities in Massachusetts, rejecting Governor Patrick’s proposal to eliminate local responsibility for public housing, announced today it will propose a sweeping reform of public housing that would promote greater cost efficiency without sacrificing the longstanding tradition of local control and decision-making.

The legislation to be filed by the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (MassNAHRO), would streamline the delivery of affordable housing services to the Commonwealth’s low-income families and senior citizens by encouraging collaborative administrative functions in areas such as waiting lists, vacant unit turnover, procurement and capital improvements. The MassNAHRO plan would also strengthen accountability at the local level.
