What is VITA?

ABCD provides free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) as part of the EITC Coalition, as led by Mayor Thomas M. Menino. We help residents prepare and electronically file tax returns. Thousands of individuals get the tax credits they deserve because of special people like you. The Financial Futures Initiative at ABCD would like to make sure that none of our residents in Boston are left out from getting the money they deserve.

What Can I Do as a VITA Volunteer? ABCD is looking for volunteers to serve as…

Tax Preparers
Preparers provide free assistance in accordance with IRS guidelines during the tax season. 4 hour day, evening and Saturday shifts are available.
Duties may include:
• Prepare & electronically file 2012 tax returns
• Appropriately determine the client’s eligibility for any credits/deductions
• Ensure all income, deductions, and allowable credits are claimed
• Outreach and/or Marketing Support

Tax Assistors
Assistors provide direct phone or office support to thousands of residents who would like tax assistance. Duties may include:
• Site operational support
• Screen calls to determine service eligibility
• Make appointments at ABCD network VITA sites and referrals to non-network sites
• Answer questions about tax matters related to credits, deductions and filing requirements credits based on your level of certification.
• Outreach and/or Marketing Support

How Can I Get Started? All volunteers must follow a few steps in order to serve.

• Become Certified for FREE!
• All volunteers must be annually certified by the IRS.
• Certification training begins in November, 2012 for service in starting January, 2013.
• Complete a Volunteer Application
• All volunteers must fill out an ABCD application and CORI form.
