Join us for a walking tour of Punto Urban Art Museum with Northshore CDC in Salem.

From a segregated neighborhood to a tourist destination, can public art and affordable housing help integrate Urban America?

In just 5 years, The Point Neighborhood in Salem MA, a low income-immigrant community located just outside Salem’s vibrant downtown, went from being an area with stigma from people in and out the neighborhood to being highlighted in the Salem's Tourist Destination guide.  A combination of local and world renowned artist worked together to install 50 large scale murals and sculptures on and around affordable housing to create a world class open-air urban art museum.

Since the project, The Punto Urban Art Museum, launched in 2017, the neighborhood has been positively mentioned in local and international acclaimed news media such as The Boston Globe, Juxtapoz Magazine, New England Design Magazine, the Peabody-Essex Museum member newsletter and more.

Behind the art, there is a neighborhood revitalization process undertaken by North Shore CDC in 2013. In 5 years,  North Shore CDC has rehabbed 180 units, 19 buildings, 2 parks, and open and community center. This process has been recognized with awards by the American Planning Association, the Congress for the New Urbanism and others.
