About the Role

The Youth and Young Adult Counselor is an instrumental part of the YouthBuild North Shore Program. They are the front line staff that help provide youth with the support to be self-sufficient and successfully complete the program and reach their goals. The Youth Counselor will conduct life coaching/ case management and ongoing counseling support, advocacy and guidance to support YouthBuild North Shore program constituents in their personal, legal, and social service needs. The Youth Counselor will be a mentor and advocate for the youth and assure that they are taking advantage of all that program and program partners have to offer. They will be responsible for running case conferences and supporting staff and life coaches through a trauma-informed best-practice.

Services Support Services

● Lead life coaching/case management supportive services at YouthBuild North Shore

● Support constituents during the on-boarding portion of the program through intake assessments, support with obtaining eligibility documentation on health, education, employment, mental health service providers etc.

● Develop a supportive service pipeline of high need referrals and resources for constituents

● Meet with constituents weekly to discuss their service plan and progress in the program

● Maintain relationships with other community providers and attend meetings as it pertains to the constituents’ needs (ie court, foster care reviews, advocacy meetings)

● Facilitate supportive group activities that will foster team building, conflict resolution, mediation and plan recreational activities i.e., field trips and special events

● Advocate on behalf of participants for all social service needs

● Identify and expose participants to cultural, political, and social events or activities and organize


Administration - Data and Record Keeping, and Training

● Write and track written progress notes on all cases and other required information for the case record, and connect with team to ensure they are tracking through progress notes

● Assist with performing reviews on participants’ trends and follow up with resolution as part of case coordination

● Assist with program recruitment and outreach efforts for quality program enrollment

● Run weekly case conferences discuss service plan and the outcomes for participants


Education and Experience

● Must be passionate about working with opportunity Youth and Young Adults ages 16 and older and work from a “Youth First Lens”

● High School Diploma required, Bachelor's Degree preferred

● Minimum of one year counseling, recreational therapy or crisis intervention experience

● Previous group facilitation, conflict resolution and classroom management experience

● Must have a driver license in good standing and ability to drive a 15 passenger vehicle



● Must be able to negotiate systems that will benefit the participants and have impeccable researching skills to navigate complex systems

● Must have working knowledge of computers and computer systems

● Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with others around program issues and team teach

● Knowledge of or willingness to learn how to write effective case notes and manage a diverse caseload

● Must be able to provide an inclusive program space and understand the needs of marginalized youth and young adults of all backgrounds, cultures and identities
