Job Description

GBLS is an AA/EO/accessible employer committed to diversity in the workforce and regards differences as assets.

Greater Boston Legal Services has an opening for a staff attorney of 0-5 years’ experience to work in the Housing Unit, representing tenants living in the City of Boston who are at risk of displacement, with a particular focus on tenants who have Section 8 and other housing vouchers.

The threat of homelessness places unbearable stress on some of the most vulnerable individuals and families in our community, and rapid development in the City is causing widespread displacement.   This position will involve representing clients in individual cases challenging termination of Section 8 benefits, appealing Section 8 terminations in the Housing Court, and defending tenants from eviction in court.  The attorney, working as part of the GBLS Housing Unit, will use individual cases to promote systemic change.

The position involves responsibility for client cases including interviews, factual investigation, research and analysis of law, development of written and oral legal arguments, negotiation with opposing counsel, preparation for and handling of administrative and court hearings. The position may also include legislative advocacy, policy advocacy, law reform work, and supervising law students and volunteer interns.

Qualifications: Admission to the Massachusetts Bar or comity required (must be fully admitted to the Massachusetts Bar as of June 2019) and 0-5 years of experience required; experience in housing law and/or courtroom experience preferred; written and oral fluency in Spanish or another language spoken by GBLS’ clients is preferred.  This position is grant funded and if funding ends for this position, it is possible the attorney may be transferred to another law unit at Greater Boston Legal Services.

Salary is based on a union scale. GBLS offers a generous benefits package and a student loan repayment assistance plan for eligible attorneys.
