Job Description

Lawyers Clearinghouse is a vibrant organization that leverages partnerships with law firms, in-house legal departments and nonprofits to provide millions of dollars of pro bono legal services annually to low-income people.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and manages all aspects of the organization’s activities to ensure that the Clearinghouse effectively carries out its mission and achieves its vision. The Executive Director leads, and contributes complementary talents to, the Clearinghouse’s staff, which currently includes four employees with responsibilities for the Clearinghouse’s Legal Clinic for the Homeless, Nonprofit Assistance, and Access to Justice Fellows programs and its development, communications and marketing activities.

KEY Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership

  • Collaborates with the Board, staff and key stakeholders to set and achieve strategic goals
  • Ensures program effectiveness and accountability
  • Hires, trains, and supervises staff to ensure the delivery of high-quality legal services to low-income people and nonprofits that serve them
  • Fosters a culture that supports teamwork, encourages employee advancement, and results in a transparent and productive work environment
  • Promotes diversity and inclusion in the workplace and the boardroom

Development and Institutional Advancement

  • Cultivates relationships with prospective individual, foundation and corporate donors and stewards relationships with existing donors
  • Pursues and obtains funding through grants and other external sources to support program goals and reports on outcomes to maintain and increase the confidence of the foundations, law firms, and other businesses that support the Clearinghouse
  • Effectively engages the Board in providing ongoing financial support and participating in development activities
  • Represents and advocates for the Clearinghouse at pro bono community events, bench and bar functions, and industry networking events to raise awareness of the Clearinghouse and grow strategic partnerships
  • Oversees efforts to enhance the visibility and reputation of the Clearinghouse in the community

Internal Management and Administration

  • Ensures appropriate corporate governance and compliance with laws and regulations
  • Creates annual organizational and program budgets and manages revenue and expenditures
  • Oversees the organization’s annual audit, bookkeeping, tax filings, human resources functions, and insurance coverage
  • Enhances and maintains internal systems and infrastructure

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The Executive Director will be a strategic thinker and an enthusiastic ambassador for the Lawyers Clearinghouse. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting access to justice, serving vulnerable populations, and supporting the nonprofit community. We value a leader with the following attributes:

  • The ability to build and sustain productive partnerships with law firms, volunteers, nonprofits, funders, and the communities we serve
  • Experience identifying and implementing strategic initiatives
  • A proven track record in and passion for nonprofit fundraising that will enable the Clearinghouse to engage new donors, maintain current funders, and increase revenue to support our programs
  • Significant management experience directing and administering programs and working collaboratively with colleagues, board members, and external partners
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills, including the ability to successfully mentor, train and develop professional staff with varying experience levels
  • Licensed or eligible to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with at least ten years’ experience in legal services or nonprofit management
