YouthBuild North Shore Construction Coordinator

Summary

YouthBuild is a youth workforce development program designed to serve the needs of North Shore Young Adults aged 16-24. Through YouthBuild participants work towards their High School Equivalency Diploma, learn job skills, become certified Pre-Apprentice level construction workers or Certified Nursing Assistants and serve their communities by building affordable housing and becoming community leaders. Our program model integrates education, leadership development, counseling, construction, and other vocational training skills, along with resources for graduates.  

The construction coordinator is an important part to the YouthBuild program as it is the main vocational training for participants. The Construction coordinator is responsible for leading the construction components of the YouthBuild program which includes identifying construction projects, providing industry recognized training and hands on experience to youth in training for careers in the construction industry.  YBNS is looking for someone who enjoys teaching and motivating young people to become employable, and hardworking leaders in their communities. This role will also be responsible for serving as the lead in managing the renovation, rehabilitation and construction of affordable housing units.

Specific Duties

  • Teach construction skills including demolition, framing, carpentry, etc.
  • Responsible for worksite safety and the appropriate use of equipment and tools through demonstrations, modeling skills, and supervising aligned with the NCCER curriculum.
  • Responsible for conducting OSHA trainings and NCCER credentialing
  •  Develop a detailed construction plan and schedule for the duration of the program year
  • Coordinate and monitor the progress and quality of work on the worksite and of the trainees
  • Responsible for monitoring construction costs for the budget as well as work with development team to secure donations and in-kind services
  • Assuring all supplies, materials and safety equipment is kept on site and accounted for
  • Define weekly work assignment and priorities for construction trainers and trainees
  • Provide oversight of the on-site construction training by:
    • Ensuring that trainees get consistent and adequate training
    • Helping set standards for appropriate behavior and ways to handle problems on the construction site
    • Ensuring worksite safety, teaching safety procedures and proper construction techniques
  • Supervise and evaluate construction trainers (crew leaders)
  • Participate as part of the management team in program planning and decision making, keeping the director informed of the progress, problems and needs of the on-site construction work and training progress.
  • Assist in the development of job opportunities for trainees in conjunction with other members of YouthBuild North Shore, and, where appropriate, assist trainees in setting their career goals
  • Participate in negotiations with unions, contractors or other individuals on construction related matters

Essential Functions of this position require:

  • Manual dexterity, (may include fine or large motor skills dependent upon position)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with opportunity youth
  • Lifting , kneeling, squatting, climbing, crawling, stooping, turning/twisting, balancing, reaching and handling with varying frequencies
  • Heavy work: Occasional lifting and carrying objects up to 75 Lbs
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50 lbs
  • High energy and a positive role model to help motivate young people to succeed

Qualifications

  • Licensed contractor with demonstrated experience in construction management.
  • Experience or interested in training young people in the building trades and a strong commitment to helping young people succeed in an innovative training program to reorient their lives and promote leadership skills.
  • Team-oriented, experience in supervising and training staff.
  • Strong communication skills and good sense of humor.
  • Positive relationship with local trade unions.
  • Driver’s license required
