Apply by 9/27/21 for a 10/25/21 start date

Are you interested in affordable homes? Would you like to reduce economic disparities exacerbated by COVID-19? Do you want to support community members who are working on advancing better housing policies? Do you pride yourself in your organizational and communication skills? Those who work with The Neighborhood Developers get experience working on these and other community-based activities.

This VISTA will join a team dedicated to communications and volunteer engagement activities. This is an ideal position for someone who is a people person as well as a good communicator and writer who would like to build skills in general communications, graphic design, new program development, and volunteer engagement at a dynamic and well-regarded non-profit.

Depending on skills and interests, the VISTA will handle social media, story-collection, press releases, graphic design of collateral, and more to promote agency programs and to raise agency visibility.

Additionally, the VISTA will build TND’s volunteer program by engaging individual and corporate volunteers in program activities, both in-person and remote. Examples of recent volunteer opportunities include recruiting volunteers to tutor school children, paint murals, make park improvements, and assisting low-income households to access rental assistance, tax credits, and other public support programs.

The Neighborhood Developers is located in Chelsea MA, right across the Mystic River from Boston. The VISTA has the option of remote work as well in-person.

The mission of the Neighborhood Developers (http://theneighborhooddevelopers.org/) is to create strong neighborhoods enabling community members to secure a stable home, achieve economic mobility, and determine their own future. We build affordable homes, with nearly 1,300 residents in our properties. TND also provides services that support families to recover economically from COVID-19 and to come together with others to change systems that economic barriers. Our work is focused on three multi-cultural cities that abut Boston to the north including Chelsea, Revere, and Everett.

VISTA Member Activities

During the year of service, the VISTA will be responsible for the following objectives:

  1. Create communications content and campaigns (using social and other forms of media) that are designed to activate a client, donor or volunteer. Monitor analytic tools to understand results; adjust practices based on findings.
  2. Develop, test and document systems and processes to recruit, train and support a rewarding experience for 60 community and corporate volunteers.
  3. Work with TND staff to identify appropriate volunteer activities; develop and maintain a schedule of volunteer opportunities for 2022.
  4. Conduct outreach to corporate partners, mutual aid volunteer organizations, and universities to support volunteer and intern recruitment.
  5. Update a volunteer engagement program “playbook” that details everything the program coordinator needs to know to successfully steward, measure, and grow the TND volunteer program.
  6. Design systems improvements that use client, donor, and volunteer information captured within the agency’s Salesforce database to segment and target our communication efforts.
  7. Develop a comprehensive external communications plan targeted to volunteers, TND donors, other audiences via newsletter, social media, and other output sources with the goals to 1) promote agency events and programs, 2) increase recurring donations, and 3) increase donor engagement with the organization. To this end, develop a system to be up-to-date on all department's activities to facilitate promotion and to amplify messaging across appropriate channels (e.g. website, social media, email).

Please note this is a VISTA member position, not a staff position. VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) provides full-time volunteers to nonprofit, faith-based and other community organizations to create and expand programs that bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. In addition to a living allowance, volunteers receive an education award or cash stipend, health insurance, and week-long training.
