Job Description

New Ecology, Inc. (NEI) seeks a full-time Staff Accountant. Reporting to Principal Director of Finance and Analytics, the Staff Accountant will be responsible for day-to-day general accounting and overall bookkeeping. The ideal candidate will have a background in accounting, a keen eye for accuracy, and the ability to manage competing priorities and shift between tasks easily.

Our core work is providing energy efficiency and green building services that cost-effectively improve the performance, health, durability, and climate-readiness of the built environment. Our clients are typically owners of multifamily housing, (with an emphasis on affordable housing) and community-based projects such as municipal, educational, and arts buildings. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage Accounts Payable, including accurately entering bills, following up for approval to ensure timely payment in weekly pay runs; and booking associated journal entries for prepaid and accrued items
  • Review staff expense reports, including following up for missing receipts, correcting for accuracy, following up for approval to ensure timely payment
  • Support Accounts Receivable, including recording daily cash receipts, following up for overdue payments, sending invoices out to clients, creating client statements
  • Support Monthly Bank Reconciliations, including uploading transaction files, enter transactions and conducting reconciliations
  • Maintain electronic files and database records such as creating new contract records, customer payments records, vendor records and files
  • Monitor finance email account, determining when to escalate items to other team members, and communicating effectively with colleagues, vendors and clients
  • Contribute to the month-end close process with journal entries including but not limited to cash, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, payroll, benefits and deferred revenue
  • Support Finance Team by conducting analyses, completing grant allocations and creating financial and management reports, as requested
  • Contribute to the annual financial close and audit process by creating audit schedules, completing documented reconciliations, collecting documents and keeping up to date with accounting rules
  • Lead the annual 1099 filing process
  • Contribute to the implementation and adherence to internal financial controls and accounting procedures, ensuring compliance with GAAP

Qualifications:

  • 3-4+ years of experience in finance and accounting , with preference for experience in non-profit accounting
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Dropbox, Slack and experience with an accounting ERP system
  • General familiarity with financial statements including balance sheet and income statement and experience working in the general ledger
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively and meet required deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities, including communicating with remote employees and effective email management skills
  • Ability to review and interpret contracts
  • General familiarity with non-profit operations, grant accounting and non-profit audit preparation is preferred
     

Schedule: Full-Time, Monday through Friday during normal business hours

Compensation: $60,000-70,000 and generous benefits package.  Professional development is a priority and we provide financial assistance for training and certifications.

Work Location: Hybrid, with three days per week remote and two days per week in person in one of New Ecology’s offices (Boston, MA, Wilmington, DE, or Baltimore, MD)
